1993-1989: INITIAL ACCIDENT & RECOVERY
This initial accident and the resulting three surgeries in the first month to salvage my leg. Immediately followed by 6 months of intensive recovery. Then the monitoring of limb for anticipated complications.
1989-08-24 to 1993: Post Accident Recovery. Monitoring and Evaluations by Orthopedic & Plastic Surgeons.
After being discharged from the hospital I spent the next 6 months in physical therapy to regain knee and ankle flexion, muscle strength, allowing the skin grafts to heal and waiting for peroneal nerve function to return. I was also fit for my first KAFO brace (Knee ankle foot orthotic) to be used during all ambulation to provide lateral support to my knee.
Over the course of the next couple of years the knee began to develop a valgus deformity due to abnormal growth resulting from damage to the lateral growth plates. Valgus went from 10 degrees in 1989 to 30 degrees in 1993. To compensate the ankle begin to supinate and invert.
